A Clean Well Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway

I was having a very difficult day, but did not realize how bad until I accidentally spoke aloud. This occurred when I arrived at a hair salon to pick up my teenage daughter. My daughters and I are regular customers at this salon, so I was greeted right away. My daughter was still having her hair done. So, I asked the owner how she was doing today. She replied that she was trying to get through a very crazy busy day. I commiserated with her and agreed that today is a very difficult day for me, as well. The owner is listening, but not really. You know? But my daughter and her hair dresser are listening to every word. They mainly heard the part of my response in which I stated, that I was trying to get through hour by hour and day by day, until bedtime comes and I have to get through another day and so forth…
I am getting to my point…
To make a long story short, my daughter was very concerned with my depressing responses. She later told me I sounded like a character straight out of a Hemingway short story. She proceeded to quote several lines from his collection. If you are also suffering from depression or specifically cynicism, be warned that you may remind someone of some very cynical writers, namely Hemingway. It was not a wasted moment. She took the time to educate me on Hemingway’s writing. How his writing includes short and pointed sentences. She did not leave out- that at times his writing is pretty. However, she mentioned that she could also quote me Fitzgerald’s more flowery cynical writing. If you care to read about cynical American writing, you should pick up a copy of Hemingway’s short stories.

Hey Again

I am currently reading 10% Happier by Dan Harris.  I am almost done reading. The book is about a man’s story on being happy.  His experience is that practicing calmness, being focused, being less reactive, and having less chaos increased his happiness. I don’t want to ruin the book by how he achieves this. Sorry! It is more meaningful to read it yourself. If you decide to read it, let me know what you think!

Reading has always been a big part of my life.  Last year when I was going through a very difficult time, I was not able to enjoy reading. This was very hard for me!  I went from reading 3 books a week to barely getting through a few pages. I am slowly getting back into reading, which is good.

I look forward to hearing from everyone!
